Ubud is the cultural and artistic centre of Bali. The route to Ubud itself takes in several villages, each specialising in various handicrafts: Tohpati for Batik art, Batubulan for stone carving, Celuk for gold and silver craft (particularly jewellery), and Mas for wood carving.
An Ubud tour, though, is not just for arts and culture lovers. Ubud and its surrounding area is a mecca for bird watchers, foodies, photographers, shoppers, adventure seekers, wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers – and anyone seeking a change from the beach or pool! Time for a little pampering? Ubud is also a world renowned centre of spas and holistic and natural therapies.
|Type||Half or Full Day|
BEGIN…your Ubud tour with a stop or two at one of the many handicrafts villages along the route. Then decide how you’d like to spend a morning, afternoon, evening or full day exploring Ubud, based on your interests. Here are a just few ideas:
BROWSE…the traditional Art Market (Pasar Ubud) and then explore the streets radiating out from it, which are lined with the wares of various artisans. Shop til you drop, or allow a little time to visit one or more of the many art museums and galleries in Ubud.
LEARN…for creative spirits, Ubud offers many classes and workshops. Try an art class or make a piece of silver jewellery. Or take a cooking class and discover the secrets of authentic Balinese cuisine. Visit local markets and prepare your own meal under the guidance of a Balinese chef. Or maybe a meditation or yoga class is more up your alley.
EXPLORE…the beautiful surrounding countryside of Ubud with a guided or solo walk or cycling expedition.
REJUVENATE…mind, body, spirit. Chakra balancing, reiki, de-tox programs, Auryvedic medicine – name a holistic therapy and you’ll probably find it in Ubud. Or maybe just indulge in a little luxury spa treatment or one of a myriad of specialist massage forms available. The lush green, tranquil surrounds of Ubud provide a setting in perfect harmony with nature for wellness centres. And options for every budget and timeframe abound.
EXPLORE…a temple or two (and combine a refreshing dip!) Though not particularly noted for its temples, Ubud is about a 20 minute drive from Gunung Kawi Sebatu, one of Bali’s prettiest temples. You’re welcome to swim in the spring fed, clear water ponds (the waters here are considered holy and it’s said feelings are healed here!). Closer to Ubud, Taman Saraswati is also worth a visit for its very pretty lotus pond.
ENJOY…a meal at the beginning or end of your Ubud tour. A ‘foodies’ paradise, Ubud offers everything from vibrant urban cafe scene, to tranquil settings with stunning views, to fine dining with some of Bali’s best restaurants. Add in an endless choice of cuisine, alfresco dining everywhere, cooling fans and comfortable lounging furniture, (and free WiFi, of course), and people or nature ‘gazing’ is an entertaining activity in itself.
EXPERIENCE…Balinese culture, with a vast choice of Balinese dance styles performed in Ubud in the evenings. For example, the Wayang Kulit is a particularly interesting form of puppet theatre which employs light, casting the puppets’ shadows onto a cloth screen, to perform the story in clever silhouette. (If you want to take in any Balinese dance performance, you’ll need to be in Ubud in the evening).
VISIT…the Sacred Monkey Forest. Very close to Ubud, the monkeys (though cheeky and mischievous as ever) are not as aggressive as they can be in many other monkey forests in Bali. Look for the temple deepest in the forest – it has a real ‘Indiana Jones’ feel to it.
CREATE…your own Ubud tour. Why choose a ‘standard’ Ubud tour with a tired itinerary most Bali tour operators assume all tourists want, and never even think of changing? Ubud has so many unique and fascinating attractions and activities, we provide this flexibility so you can explore what appeals to you most, and at the pace you enjoy.
